Here is Volume 2 of Funny Brummie Pictures by Robert Geoghegan about his home city of Birmingham where he has lived all his life. His paintings, often captioned, are full of the detail and colour of modern urban life with a comic twist.
There’s something here for everyone – from punks on a night service bus to squirrels taking part in ‘Parkrun’. There are football pictures about Blues, Villa and West Brom and, of course, more Birmingham bus pictures with zoo animals, the Beach Boys, dogs, bears, Jim Morrison and Hattie Jacques all aboard. The Peaky Blinders are included again, this time on a ‘Team Building Day Out at Birmingham Sea Life Centre’ and Tommy and Arthur riding e-scooters. Landmark buildings are here – Highbury Hall with a Rebecca twist, Cadbury’s factory where they’re making dark chocolate on the nightshift, Sarehole Mill where a school party are causing ‘Trouble at Mill’, to name but a few. Pubs and chippies also feature, with a customer complaining of soggy chips outside Kings Heath’s Hi Tide. The Loch Ness monster, Gandalf, the Owl and the Clocktower and the Brothers Grimm all make an appearance. Munch’s The Scream appears on ‘The Ramp’ and Van Gogh paints Starry Night over Birmingham’s city centre skyline. There are also pictures of the ‘Mechanical Bull’ in Centenary Square during Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Robert sells prints of his work at monthly local art markets in Moseley, Harborne and Edgbaston and at the Birmingham Christmas Market in St Philip’s Square/Pigeon Park.
As well as being a practising artist, Robert is an art tutor and teaches drawing and painting to adults. He also gives talks about his work to schools, art societies and local groups.
