Gold in my Veins is an autobiographical
account of the life of Betty Wherry, an apprentice gilder at Royal Crown Derby
in the 1930s, who rose through the Company to become Gilding Trainer and
Assistant Curator of the factory’s prestigious museum.
After having set the context of her
childhood, Betty describes her apprenticeship in the porcelain industry, the
fascinating people she met and the life and work of a gilder.
Punctuated with anecdotes and humorous
tales of the workpeople at the factory, the text gives detailed accounts of a
number of royal visits to Royal Crown Derby. Betty became an ambassador for the
Company which involved her in travelling to America, Canada and Australia,
trips which she describes in detail.
The book is illustrated with a range of photographs in both black & white and colour portraying significant people in her life as well as pieces of Derby porcelain. Technical aspects of the gilding process are illustrated by Betty’s own line drawings.
